AI Policy Overview
Iowa lawmakers have yet to prioritize artificial intelligence policies broadly. However, Iowa enacted sexual deepfakes laws in 2024. A 2024 education law (IA SF 2435) appropriated $2.8 million to expand degree and certificate programs in the areas of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, computer science, computer engineering, data science, software engineering, and other high-demand areas related to technology.
Deepfakes
In 2024, Iowa enacted a sexual deepfakes law (IA HF 2240) that makes it a crime to harass by the dissemination, publishing, distribution, or posting of a visual depiction showing another person in a state of full or partial nudity or engaged in a sex act that has been altered to falsely depict another person. An additional law enacted in 2024 (IA SF 2243) modifies sexual exploitation of a minor laws to include computer-generated images.
