Maine
AI Policy Overview
Maine lawmakers have yet to prioritize artificial intelligence policies broadly. However, Maine enacted a law in 2021 prohibiting state agencies and employees from using facial recognition technology except in certain circumstances.
In late 2024, Gov. Mills (D) signed an executive order establishing an AI Task Force. The Task Force will bring together business, education, labor, government, and community leaders to study the challenges and opportunities associated with the proliferation of AI. The Task Force is charged with preparing policy recommendations that will position Maine to harness the benefits of AI while minimizing risks for people and businesses. The executive order directs the Task Force to prepare a report of its recommendations by October 31, 2025.
Facial Recognition
In 2021, Maine enacted a law (ME HP 1174) that prohibits state agencies, employees, and public officials from using facial recognition technology except in certain circumstances, such as investigating serious crimes or identifying a deceased or missing person.
